There are two forms of fish oil available: ethyl ester (EE), a synthetic version, and triglyceride (TG), the natural form found in fish. The synthetic form (EE) requires a more complex digestive process: pancreatic enzymes act up to 50 times more slowly to release fatty acids, resulting in an absorption rate of only 20% under normal conditions. In contrast, the natural form (TG) is efficiently processed by the body, reaching absorption rates of up to 68% — nearly tripling bioavailability.
Furthermore, the chemical structure of EE makes it more vulnerable to oxidation, compromising its stability and increasing the risk of rancidity.
